Tips to Help You Win in a Job Interview

We’ve all been there. Feeling a bit nervous, anxious wanting to be somewhere else. You just want to get the interview out of the way. Worry no more because help is here. If you prepare properly you can actually enjoy the experience and win!

o Don’t panic. That’s easy for you to say I can hear you say. If you are asked a question don’t jump right in there and start talking for the sake of it. There is no such thing as an awkward silence. o Try to structure your answer, for example, explain the situation, the task you were involved in, the action that you took and the result or the outcome. This makes it easy for you when answering the question and easier for the panel to give you marks for your answer.

o Within you, you have the ability to answer the questions. Think about this. You have been chosen because you have displayed on your application that you have relevant experience. You have life and work experiences that are unique that can be used to demonstrate you are the right person for the job. Use these examples in the interview to illustrate this.

o The panel do not want you to fail. These are people who are there to simply you ask a few questions. They’re not trying to catch you out. They won’t ask you anything you don’t know already.

o If you don’t understand the question hey no problem. Tell them and they’ll repeat it for you. Its OK they’ll not mark you down for it.

o If you want the question rephrased then that’s no problem too. Just ask the person to rephrase the question and they will gladly do so. The second time around the rephrased question can make more sense and this will enable you to answer the question properly. You’ll be glad you asked them to repeat the question!

o Prepare, Prepare, prepare! I can’t emphasise this enough. It gives you the edge and it will help to calm your nerves. Find out about the job and the nature of the interview. What if other people in for the job didn’t prepare and you did do you think it would make a difference? You bet it would!

o Don’t be put off if there is a panel in the room. This doesn’t make any difference. You can only be asked one question at a time.

o You will survive it. It’s not a life or death situation. Bear this in mind and relax.

o Remember, an interview isn’t an interrogation it’s a two way conversation.

o Smile and use eye contact. Establish a rapport. The interviewers are human beings too!

o Use hand movement when explaining your answer. Look at videos of great speakers and how they talk. It’ll give you a great example of how body language can be used to demonstrate a point.

o Be excited, be enthusiastic. If your talking about customers be enthusiastic, this will come across to the panel that you are genuine when you answer questions.

o An interview is a massive opportunity, something to be excited about, not feared. This is your chance to shine.
