Granada is a distinctive city located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the South of Spain. Granada is known especially for its Moorish heritage, from the period when the city was under Moorish rule from the 8th through the 15th centuries.
The greatest example of this and Granada’s most famous landmark is the Alhambra Palace. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, the Alhambra fortress complex sits majestically upon a hill. It was begun in the 13th century and tells the story of the Moorish presence in southern Spain. Its Islamic architecture is famous, and the Christian additions from the 16th century on along with the gardens and many other aspects make for a most fascinating attraction. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have many more Spain Vacation Information, Travel Review and Tourist Attractions Articles Now Available.
Two more UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Granada are the Moorish Palace of Generalife along with the old casbah (old section of a city) of Albaicin, which is an area comprised of narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses sitting on an opposite hill from the Alhambra. There are many other fine old Moorish buildings, and in fact Granada has the largest collection of historic Moorish buildings in all of Europe.
The prestigious Granada University is a major factor in the city with the large student population contributing to the lively and vibrant atmosphere both day and night; with many vibrant bars, cafes and clubs. There is a significantly quieter feel to the city when the students are home for vacation.
Granada Cathedral is known as Spain’s finest Renaissance style church. It was begun in 1529, and although it was worked on for 200 years, the work was never finished and today there are no Spires.
