How to Treat Diarrhea

Diarrhea is defined as the passage of multiple watery, loose, or unformed stools. Diarrhea is not a disease , but rather, a medical condition that could be indicative of disease, illness, allergy, or infection. Diarrhea is only a symptom and therefore, treatment depends entirely on its cause. Most cases of diarrhea are self-limiting, though chronic diarrhea may be a sign of other health problems and should be brought to the attention of your doctor. Adults experience an average of 4 bouts of diarrhea each year.

Diarrhea is not fun for anyone, including your pet. Many times your pet has eaten something rotten or has eaten too much human food causing the runs. And although diarrhea helps clean the system out it’s no fun for you cleaning it up. Here are a few things you can do to help your pet get over their diarrhea. One of the best things to do to help get rid of your pet’s diarrhea is to put them on a fast for a day.

The augmentation of pitta in the body or weak digestive power causes diarrhea. Improper eating habits, fried food in oil or ghee (clarified butter), meats, vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, beans, nuts and sweets, milk and citrus fruits simultaneously and impure food or water causes diarrhea.

Diarrhea treatment can be achieved by using Ginger. In cases of diarrhea that were caused by indigestion, fresh or dry ginger has shown to be very useful. Use a piece of dry ginger along with a small crystal of rock salt, a qtr. Tsp. of this powder should be taken with a small piece of jaggery.

Decoction prepared from pomegranate skin is very useful in stopping diarrhea. To prepare the decoction, take 50 grams of fresh pomegranate skin. Soak it in 800 ml. of water for one hour. Boil until a quarter of the volume remains (200 ml). Store this mixture in a clean, dry bottle. A couple of tablespoons can be taken several times a day. If there is blood in the stools, add half a teaspoon of honey to the decoction.

For toddlers and young children, use an ORS, which contains the right mix of salt, sugar, potassium and other nutrients to help replace lost body fluids. Children older than 1 year may also have clear soups, clear sodas or juice mixed with water to help prevent dehydration. You should avoid giving your child plain water and dark sodas. Water alone does not contain enough salt and nutrients to help with dehydration. Dark sodas are typically very high in sugar and can irritate your child’s stomach.

Drink a lot of fluids . To stay healthy, it’s essential to replace all the fluids that diarrhea takes out of you. Doctors recommended drinking as much as you can hold –at least eight to twelve glasses of water a day. Sports drinks are even better than water because they contain many essential minerals; called electrolytes that you need to stay healthy.
