They fret over every single detail. They come to me wanting to know what font is best to use, what size font they should use, how to order things, how many pages it should be, what to write for their objective statement (and endlessly debate about whether or not to include it), what they should do about gaps in employment, whether or not they are they putting in too much detail, whether or not they are they being detailed enough. The truth about all this worrying they do about the resume is they are totally missing the point. If you really want to know how to get a job interview, then please listen up. The most important factor is NOT your resume. In fact, most of the resumes submitted won’t even be read. This is because there are so many applications for every job opportunity, the hiring manager just doesn’t have time to go through them all. If you have hundreds of job applications, you aren’t going to carefully read every resume.

The best way to get a job interview is to create a REALLY impressive cover letter. It should be unique and worded in such a way that it get noticed by someone reading it really quickly. It should specifically ask for the job interview. It should show some personality. Remember, people hire people. They don’t hire highly polished resumes or “professional” letters that look like every other letter in the stack. You’ve got to stand out and you’ve got about 15 seconds on average to capture the hiring manager’s attention.

The cover letter is your one and only chance to set yourself apart from all the other applicants. It is your defense against getting tossed into the reject pile. You need to do everything you can to make your cover letter really shine.

Remember this also. The cover letter is a one-pager and it should have LOTS of white space even at that. You can’t say everything in a one page letter. You need to instead concentrate on getting them to invite you in for an interview. If you can’t write well enough to do this, you need to get some help with your cover letter.
