‘Scareware’ is the name given to various products, found online, that persuade you to buy them through fear.
Firewalls, antivirus, registry cleaners and anti-spyware programs are the typical products of choice for scareware manufacturers.
Fake scan results and pop-up advertisements are utilised by the scareware programs in order to try and force the user into purchasing the ‘cure’ from the author of the scareware.
Some people will always buy this scareware, even if the results it gives could be easily proven to be false – if only they compared them to a legitimate program (many of which are free to download themselves if you know where to look for them).
Unbelievably, the number of people who buy fake scareware products is on the rise – a report I read recently from Symanted suggested that over 40 million fake programs had been bought in the last 12 months!
Luckily, you can avoid fake antivirus scams, as well as other scareware, quite easily.
If you apply a bit of commonsense and do a little reading on the subject then you will be fine.
Think about how you came across the scareware program in the first place – if it was via a popup then that should be a pretty big red flag!
In terms of learning, I know just the place, my blog about internet security covers many topics, including anti-virus scams and scareware.
