Citronella Oil – Health Benefits for Citronella Oil

Citronella is a type of grass which grows mainly in Asian countries and some islands of South Pacific and it has a rich, crispy lemony aroma. The name citronella probably came because of this lemony aroma. The oil is extracted from two types of Citronella, namely Ceylon type or Cymbopogon Nardusand and Java type which is called Cymbopogon Winterianus. There are many Health Benefits for Citronella Oil and these can be attributed to its properties as an antibacterial, antiseptic, antidepressant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, deodorant, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicidal, insect repellent, stimulant, tonic, stomachic and vermifuge. The extraction process of the oil is steam distillation of the fresh plant.

The main components in the Ceylon type of Citronella are citronellol, citronellal, geraniol, limonene, and methyl isoeugenol while the Java variety contains citronellal, geraniol, geranyl actate and limonene as its main constituents. The geraniol and citronellal content is in higher concentration in the Java type of citronella and because of this the oil extracted obtained from the Java variety is of higher quality when compared to the oil from the Ceylon variety.  The main producers of citronella oil are Indonesia and China and it is also produced by many other Asian, South & Latin American and African countries but in lesser amounts.

Flavouring Agent

Citronella oil is used widely used as a flavoring agent for food and beverages and the oil has many medicinal uses. Citronella has important components methyl isoeugenol and a few other which makes this oil an effective antibacterial. It kills the bacteria present in the body and prevents any further bacterial growth in the body.  Isoeugenol is particularly helpful in treating infections in wounds, colon, urethra, urinary bladder, stomach, intestines, urinary tracts, and kidneys and prostrate.  Citronella oil is an effective antidepressant and it fights depression and provides relief from anxiety, sadness and negative feelings and offers a fresh and happy feeling and hope.

Citronella oil blends well with essential oils like cedar wood, clary sage, geranium, eucalyptus, rosemary, tea tree and peppermint. It is also effectively used for removing lice, body and head louse and fleas. Since the oil has rich citrus aroma it is used in deodorants and body sprays in small quantities. The citrus like aroma is good for driving away body odour. The oil can be used by mixing with bath water to have a refreshing body odour.
