Are Vitamin Supplements Useful?

These days it is impossible to turn on the TV, go to the gym, or walk into a health club without hearing about supplements. There are many types of supplements that range from burning fat to boosting your metabolism. Many of these products are not worth even the containers that they come in.

Knowing this, you might be wondering, “are there any supplements that are worth taking?” Multivitamins, better known as mineral supplements aren’t necessary but for many people they may be a good idea. In resent studies it is found that 90 percent of people do not have enough magnesium, chromium, vitamins A, B, E, zinc, and many other vitamins that your body needs. For example, the typical woman gets on two-thirds of the calcium that she needs. This lack of calcium can later lead to osteoporosis. The majority of women that fall into this category also fail to eat enough fresh fruit and dark leafy green vegetables. The lack of these foods leads to a lack of folic acid, vitamin C, and any other important nutrients.

Another reason that supplements are great is because even if you have the best diet in the world, your food may not have all the vitamins that you need. For instance, vitamin E is a very important supplement that your body needs. You would have to consume 25 cups of cooked spinach in order to see the same benefits.

This being said, it does not mean that you can replace food with supplements. Science has proven that the combination of food, along with supplements is beneficial; one cannot work without the other. What you really need to concentrate is what type of food that you put into your body. No supplement can replace a diet of beer and Doritos. When you eat healthy food you also get protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and many other nutrients and minerals.

When looking for a supplement to take, be sure that it doesn’t go far beyond the U.S. recommended daily allowance of that vitamin. If it does, you are just wasting money. Your body can only absorb only so much of a nutrient; if you go over that amount all you will end up with is expensive urine.

Another thing that you should be aware of are those designer vitamins that are promoted by famous people on television. The majority of drug store brands are identical. There is no magic combination of supplements that you can take that will allow you to live to 200 years old.

To summarize, supplements are good if you are eating the right foods with them. If you are eating the right kinds of foods that are rich in nutrients, than all means add the proper supplements to achieve optimum
